Transpac Log Day 2
Dear all,
We just completed day 2 of the 2,200-nm (2,535-mile) Transpac race and have now sailed about 440-nm since the start. All is well and the boat is now flying under somewhat overcast, but otherwise magnificence conditions.
After a weak start and a bit underpowered given our relatively small jib, we did really well as the afternoon breeze came in a few hours after the start. We were able to claw back a number of the larger boats and benefited from a wind shift to the right after rounding Catalina Island. The changes we made to the boat have transformed her into a strong performer in breeze.
We sailed high under reefed main and full jib relative to the fleet and appear to be in good position somewhat to the North of our division. Don’t let daily reports fool you as they are estimated positions.
At 0600 this morning the breeze had veered sufficiently to the North to allow us to hoist our smallest spinnaker. With breeze now in the 18-19-knots range the boat is beam reaching and rarely slows below 13-knots with routine speeds in mid-teens and our highest exceeding 20-knots during surfing.
Thank you for your great support. Again, please don’t respond as it will choke the Satellite phone.
